There are many ongoing trials researching the effects of various medications and nutrients in forms of Muscular Dystrophy. Heart medications such as ACE inhibitors (angiotensin converting enxyme inhibitors) are being assessed for protective effects on the heart in some patients. High dose steroids are being assessed in Duchenne’s MD. Also several trials are trying to formally assess the benefits of Coenzyme Q10, high dose Vitamin C, other anti-oxidants, and various muscle protein/amino acid preparations. Muscular Dystrophy because of the limitations of treatment currently is a group of disorders that require constant monitoring of new therapies and research results.
The treatments that seem to hold the most promise currently are gene therapies. Again, these treatments try and replace tissue that have a normal gene compliment in making normal muscle proteins and enzymes. The hope is that once transplanted or incorporated into the individual, function will normalize and deterioration will slow dramatically or cease. These investigations, along with stem cell research, are still in early stages, but they hold great promise for all who suffer as a result of Muscular Dystrophy.
